Throughout its history, American advertising has used language and imagery depicting various ethnic and racial groups. A great many of these representations of non-White people would today be labeled as racist and stereotypical. Although contemporary advertising generally strives to be sensitive to multicultural issues, there remain many places in advertising and marketing where greater efforts are possible. This unit focuses specifically on Native American including Alaskan and Hawaiian ethnic imagery in advertising. It examines both older representations and some more contemporary ones. The cigar store Indian is one of the earliest uses of Native American imagery in advertising and marketing.

Clovis and Folsom Cultures

Paleoindians During the Ice Age
You know, the ones who skied in jeans with no irony whatsoever. Archeological evidence suggests that the first people to appear in Colorado were the big game hunters or Paleoindians , probably from the north. These people are divided into the Clovis and subsequent Folsom cultures named for the towns where their artifacts were first discovered. Archeologists distinguish the two cultures by their different types of spear points. Ice Age Colorado was home to mammoth, mastodon, bison bigger than modern buffalo , horses, camels, even enormous ground sloths. A cooler and wetter climate meant even more readily available water and food sources for these animals. The big-game hunting Paleoindians happily took advantage of all this diversity. Several extremely important Paleoindian sites have been found in Colorado. The Dent Site on the South Platte River near Greeley is the only Clovis mammoth kill site in Colorado; it has been radiocarbon dated to roughly 12, years ago and consists of mammoth bones and several spear points. In addition to the kill site, three Clovis tool caches have been found in Colorado.

When you step into the Native American Village setting you are transported to a time long before the Mormon pioneers and early settlers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. The Teepee represents the dwelling of the Shoshone of northern Utah, whose homes and lifestyles were significantly different than the southern tribes. This new Teepee, the largest in America, can easily seat guests in the comfort of air-conditioning in the hot weather and has heat for visits during the cooler months. As you step into the red rock you will see a female and male Hogan, rock features and a beautiful new Medicine Wheel. The Petroglyphs on Balanced Rock are replicas of designs and symbols carved into the surface by the pre-historic and indigenous peoples of Utah. Balanced Rock is a great place for guests to take a photo or selfie! There are also fun rock-type features for children to climb in this area. When you step into the Hogan, you will feel the coolness of Mother Earth, sacred to the Navajo tribe.
